Great Beards in History: Yegor Ivanovich Zolotarev


On this Day in History some 132 years ago, a bearded man breathed his last. Then again, it may not have been this exact Day in History.

What is certain, contradictory community moderated death-dates aside, is that Yegor (Egor) Ivanovich Zolotarev had one helluva beard while he was alive. His main claim to fame in his day was not his ability to grow facial hair, however. Instead, it was mathematics. You may know him via his lemma, but then again, probably not. According to Interweb legend, he solved the following equation:


I'm impressed, as I have no idea what the hell is going on up there. After solving for x (or whatever one does to solve math problems) Yegor went on to be hit by a train. He subsequently died of blood poisoning. So it goes.
